Recent figures released by Power Circle reports a strong and continued trend in the adoption of EVs in Sweden. This highly anticipated annual report highlights that new car sales of EVs has increased by 82% year-on-year, with EVs now accounting for 3% of all vehicles on Swedish roads.
And it is a trend that we expect to see continuing into 2021. Last year, a report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance predicted that EVs will account for 7% of global new-car sales by 2023.
And it’s not just in Sweden that we have seen such strong growth. During 2020, CTEK expanded its Electrical Vehicle (EV) charging portfolio into the Dutch, Norwegian and UK markets. In the UK, for example, 31,022 new passenger plug-in cars were registered in December 2020, which is 229% more than a year ago. And there are similar pictures in the Netherlands, where in December 69% of all newly registered vehicles were all-electric, whilst in Norway, 66% of new car registrations in December were electric vehicles, that accounted for 54% of new car registrations for the whole year!
The Power Circle report also demonstrates the continued rise in popularity of BEVs (fully electric cars), compared to PHEVs (plug-in-hybrid cars). BEVs took a much larger share of new vehicle registrations (66%) compared to PHEVs (34%), a gap that has been widening over the past few years.
Cecilia Routledge, Global Director for EV at CTEK said “The Power Circle report makes for some interesting reading and directly correlates with our own research undertaken during 2020. Our ‘Sweden is Charging’ report identified that 71% of Swedish commercial property owners have invested, or plan to invest within the next 6 months, in EV charging infrastructure. There is a huge appetite for EVs in Sweden and indeed across Europe. And with every new EV registration, there is an increased demand for EV chargers, either as a new domestic installation or as part of a communal charging solution that may need to be extended to cope with additional demand. With more EVs driving on our roads, the more charging points are need at home as well as in public places. 2021 look set to become another record growth year for EVs across Europe.”
